Hernia Surgery

A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue (fascia). While some hernias cause little to no discomfort, others can be painful and lead to serious, life-threatening complications if left untreated.

At Advanced Bariatric & Surgical Specialists, Dr. Craig Chang offers advanced surgical solutions for all types of hernias. Using the latest minimally invasive and robotic-assisted techniques, our goal is to restore the strength of your abdominal wall and get you back to your active lifestyle with minimal downtime.

Types of Hernias We Treat

Hernias are classified by where they occur in the body. Dr. Chang specializes in:

  • Hiatal Hernia: Occurs when the upper part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. This is often the root cause of severe acid reflux (GERD).
  • Inguinal Hernia: The most common type, occurring in the groin when the intestines push through a weak spot in the inguinal canal.
  • Ventral Hernia: A hernia that occurs anywhere along the midline of the abdominal wall.
  • Incisional Hernia: Occurs at the site of a previous surgical scar where the abdominal muscles have weakened.
  • Umbilical Hernia: Occurs near the belly button (umbilicus); common in both infants and adults.
  • Femoral Hernia: Similar to an inguinal hernia but located deeper in the groin; more common in women.

The Minimally Invasive Approach

Following the philosophy of our Reflux Surgery program, Dr. Chang prioritizes laparoscopic and robotic-assisted repairs. Unlike traditional “open” surgery that requires a large incision, minimally invasive hernia repair offers:

  • Smaller Incisions: Typically 3-4 tiny punctures rather than a long cut.
  • Reduced Pain: Less disruption to surrounding nerves and muscles.
  • Lower Infection Risk: Smaller wounds heal more predictably.
  • Quick Recovery: Most patients return to light activity within days.
  • Durable Results: We utilize high-quality surgical mesh or advanced suturing techniques to ensure a long-lasting repair.

Hiatal Hernias and Acid Reflux

Many of our patients come to us seeking relief from heartburn, only to discover a Hiatal Hernia is the cause. Because Dr. Chang is an expert in both TIF (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication) and traditional reflux surgery, he can often repair the hiatal hernia and treat the reflux in a single, coordinated approach.

Signs You May Need Surgery

You should schedule a consultation if you notice:

  1. A visible bulge in the abdomen or groin that may disappear when lying down.
  2. Pain or pressure while lifting, coughing, or straining
  3. A “heavy” sensation in the abdomen.
  4. Emergency Warning: If a hernia becomes stuck (incarcerated) and causes nausea, vomiting, or turns red/purple, seek immediate medical attention.

What to Expect

Your Consultation: Dr. Chang will perform a physical exam and may order imaging (like an ultrasound or CT scan) to determine the size and severity of the hernia.

Recovery: Most hernia repairs are performed as outpatient procedures, meaning you go home the same day. While you will need to avoid heavy lifting for several weeks, most patients find they can return to desk work and light walking within 3–7 days.
